Nick's Cabin

A cabin with a view!

Nick’s Cabin is situated on private property on the flanks of Mount Campbell, which is the start of the Arthur Range on Kahurangi National Park’s northern boundary. This will be our base for two nights and three days of exploration into the Park.

Bush & Beyond has exclusive use of the cabin for our trips, and you will be transported to the site by 4WD vehicle. The cabin sits at 1,000 metres, with a magnificent view out over Tasman Bay.

The cabin has solar lighting and shower facilities, or if you wish, a bath in the open under the stars with the lights of Motueka below you and Nelson city across the bay below.

There is a chance the local alpine parrot – the Kea – will drop in for a visit whilst you are enjoying your time at the cabin.

Day 1

A 45 minute drive from Motueka to the Flora car park on Mount Arthur (945 metres). The day will be spent walking through southern beech forest to the limestone face of Mount Arthur. On the way you will be shown the ‘Friends of Flora’ conservation project, a trapping programme to eradicate introduced predators (stoats, rats and possums) which have been decimating our native bird life.

There are a number of birds in the montane forest through to the alpine areas on Mt Arthurs flanks: bellbird, tomtit, kaka and kea, to name a few. There is also an abundance of flora types within these habitats, from the hebes and tree types of the forest, through to the seasonal alpine daisies on the open tops.

360-degree views can be seen from above the bushline - Tasman Bay in one direction and mountain range upon mountain range of the interior of Kahurangi National Park in the other.

After our day’s walk we will drive to Nick’s cabin, approximately one hours drive.

Day 2

After a leisurely breakfast enjoying the views over Tasman Bay amidst the surrounding beech forest, we will walk on a track through the bush and emerge on to the flanks of Mount Campbell, and continue on to the transmitter station on the summit. This is approximately 2 hours leisurely pace so as to enjoy the surrounding environment.

A variety of alpine flora awaits the keen botanist, and once again 360-degree vistas.

This day can be as long as the group would like, continuing along the wide-open tops.

Day 3

A leisurely morning once again and a short walk before packing up to leave Nick’s Cabin after lunch. On the way back to Motueka we will take a short walk into the Riwaka Resurgence, where you will see the crystal clear waters bubbling up from the limestone depths of Kahurangi below.
